Kolkata Knight Riders have set a target of 173 runs against Chennai Super Kings in the match played at the Dubai International Stadium in the 13th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Thursday, thanks to the brilliant innings of opener Nitish Rana (87).
Kolkata scored 66 runs in the last five overs, which helped the team lose five wickets in 20 overs to create a respectable score of 172 runs.
Together with Shubman Gill, Rana once again gave the team a strong start. Both brought the team’s score to 48 in the Powerplay and continued to score easily.
Both added 53 runs for the first wicket. Gill was bowled by Karn Sharma and gave Chennai the first success. Gill scored 26 runs. Sunil Narine, who came in at number 3, scored seven runs with the help of a six and was caught by Ravindra Jadeja off Mitchell Santner.
Playing his first IPL match this year, Rink Singh could score just 11 runs. Ambati Rayudu caught his catch off Jadeja’s ball.
Kolkata’s run pace was impacted by two consecutive wickets. Rana and captain Eoin Morgan did not want to lose the wicket and so played comfortably and in the end took big shots.
On the first ball of the 18th over, Rana was not allowed to complete a century by Lungi Nagidi caught by Sam Qurren. Rana played 61 balls in his innings and hit 10 fours and four sixes.
The captain, who scored 15 off 12 balls, returned to the pavilion in the 19th over. Dinesh Karthik scored an unbeaten 21 off 10 balls to take the team to 172.
Nagidi took two wickets for Chennai. Jadeja, Santner and Karna took one wicket each.
