Two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders will take on the three-time champions Chennai Super Kings at the Dubai International Stadium here in the 13th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Chennai has been eliminated from the playoffs, but Kolkata’s hopes are alive and it is necessary that the team headed by Eoin Morgan must win this match. Currently, he is in fifth place with 12 points from 12 matches with six wins and six defeats. He has two matches left and wins in both will qualify him for the playoffs.
If Kolkata loses even one match, then it will have to rely on the figures of other teams. Kolkata was defeated by Kings XI Punjab in the last match and that is why it is imperative for Kolkata to win every match.
Kolkata’s batting flopped badly in the last match. Apart from opener Shubman Gill and skipper Eoin Morgan, no other batsman was run. Both of them had a good partnership and raised hopes of a good score in the team, but after both of them were out, the team disintegrated and could not make a big score.
The bowlers were also disappointed. Everyone had laid down their arms in front of Mandeep Singh and Chris Gayle.
Lack of consistency in performance is the biggest weakness of the team and hence Kolkata is in a do or die situation.
Gill is the only batsman from Kolkata who is consistently doing well, but no other batsman has done so. Rahul Tripathi and Nitish Rana’s bat has also gone, but there is no continuity. It would be correct to call Dinesh Karthik a flop this season. Only one half-century has come off his bat and apart from this, he has often struggled to reach double figures.
Captain Eoin Morgan has played short innings, but now is the time that this world winning captain of England plays the kind of innings he has been playing for his national team.
Sunil Naren will also be seen. Also in bowling and batting. Naren’s bat runs, runs come fast which he showed in the match against Delhi Capitals, but his style of bowling has changed. Naren has not been effective with the ball since he returned after complaining about the action. This is worrying for Kolkata.
In the bowling of the team, Varun Chakraborty has impressed with his mystery spin. Fast bowling relies heavily on Pat Cummins, Shivam Mavi, Kamlesh Nagerkoti and the famous Krishna.
On the other hand, Chennai Super Kings have nothing to lose. He had performed unilaterally in his last match and defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore. Some changes were seen in the team which proved to be effective. Rituraj Gaikwad came as an opener and scored a half-century. Ambati Rayudu was also seen in form.
Faf du Plessis is in good form at the moment. Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja would also like to see some memorable innings with their bats at the end of the tournament. Sam Curran is searching for the team this season.
In bowling, Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur have also been useful to the team. In the spin, Mitchell Santner got a chance in the last match and took a wicket for 23 runs in four overs. Santner may also appear against Kolkata.
Chennai will have only one attempt to end the tournament with a win, and if it succeeds, the mathematics of some teams going into the playoffs can be spoiled. Kolkata will have to avoid this.
Head to head
A total of 22 matches have been played in the IPL between Chennai and Kolkata. In which Chennai has won 13 and Kolkata has won 8 matches. In the last five matches, Chennai has won three and Kolkata have won two. In the first match of this season, KKR defeated Chennai by 10 runs.
