Former West Indies captain and legendary batsman Brian Lara has said that Chennai Super Kings preferred experienced players over youngsters in the 13th season of this IPL, which was damaging for them. Three-time winner Chennai is at the bottom of the eight-team table and has been eliminated from the playoff race. This is the first time in the history of the tournament that Chennai will not be able to make it to the playoffs.
Lara said on the Star Sports show, "I think he has included a lot of older players in his team. There are not many young players in the team’s lineup. You look at them. Their foreign players have also been with the team for a long time. He prioritized the experience over the youth and it was bad for him."
Chennai have won only four matches from 12 matches. Team opener Faf du Plessis has scored the most runs for the team this season. Du Plessis has scored 401 runs at an average of 40.10. He is not supported by the other end. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s poor form has also been a concern for the team.
Lara said, "This is unbelievable. You know he goes to the playoffs every season. We expected him to play the playoffs this season as well. Three-four matches ago, he was in such a situation that he had to win every match. We all felt that this is the time when Dhoni will change things."
They said, "But things got worse after every match. That is the situation in which they should try from there next year. The upcoming matches will see what he can do with the younger players."
