Former South African all-rounder Albie Morkel feels the absence of Suresh Raina will create a big void in the Chennai Super Kings squad in the upcoming IPL and the team will have to make many changes in batting to balance it out. This time the IPL is being played in the UAE and Chennai will face Mumbai Indians in the first match of the season.
Raina has played a total of 193 matches for Chennai and scored 5000 runs. He withdrew from the tournament last month citing personal reasons.
“Raina has been a run machine for him and a great fielder as well. So his absence will create a big void. Chennai will have to make some changes and make the right balance,” Morkel said in an exclusive interview to IANS.
This time in the IPL, the most focus will be on Mahendra Singh Dhoni as he is getting on the field for the first time since the World Cup played in England last year. He has retired from international cricket on 15 August.
Morkel has played and won the IPL along with Chennai. He praised Dhoni saying, “I enjoyed the most of my time in Chennai. Our six years were very successful, but apart from that the group is very good. Dhoni was the main reason for our success. He was an example of the team. Captaining. “
He said, “He is quite capable in everything he does, but he has a habit of staying calm even under heavy pressure.”
Regarding South Africa cricket, Morkel said that in Test cricket, Dean Elgar should captain the team, while in limited overs, Quinton de Kock should continue to captain the side.
He said, “South Africa does not have much experienced leaders. Edin Markram can be seen as the future, but he needs to bring stability to his game. I will go with Elgar.”
