Australia, who defeated England by 3 wickets in the third and final ODI in Manchester, took the series 2–1, thanks to the banged centuries of Glenn Maxwell (108) and Alex Carey (106). In response to England’s 302 runs, Australia won by scoring 305 runs at the loss of 7 wickets while remaining 2 balls. For the first time since 2016, no team has beaten England in their bilateral ODI series on their own land.
The Australian team started the chase very badly and fell 5 wickets for 73 runs in 16.4 overs. After this, Maxwell and Carrie handled the innings together and made a winning partnership of 210 runs for the sixth wicket. Maxwell scored 108 runs with the help of 4 fours and 7 sixes in 90 balls, while Carrie smashed 106 runs in 114 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes. In the end, Mitchell Starc scored 11 runs in 3 balls to help the team cross the threshold of victory.
For England, Chris Woakes-Joe Root took 2–2, while Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer took the 1–1 wicket.
Earlier, England scored 302 for the loss of seven wickets in 50 overs thanks to the best innings of Johnny Bairstow (112), Sam Billings (57) and finally Chris Woakes (53 not out).
England won the toss and chose to bat, but Mitchell Starc gave him a start that the hosts did not expect. Stark took England under heavy pressure with two wickets in the first two balls of the first over.
Captain Eoin Morgan, along with Bairstow, added 67 runs for the third wicket. He was caught by Stark in an attempt to hit Adam Zampa’s ball over the midoff.
