The reason for fast bowler Dale Steyn’s poor performance in IPL-13 is the failure to play cricket due to restrictions imposed by Kovid-19. This is to say the former South African fast bowler Fanny de Villiers.
Steyn, playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, has played three matches in IPL-13 and has taken just one wicket. He has given runs at an average of 11.40.
De Villiers, who played Tests and ODIs for South Africa in 1990, said Steyn could not work on his variation according to the T20 format due to the lack of cricket before the IPL.
Speaking to IANS from South Africa, De Villieris said, "Due to Kovid-19, the rules were so strict in South Africa that you could not go out and practice a little bit. He is not young and has also suffered injuries before, so he needed to play cricket before going into the IPL. I would say Kovid is the main reason."
If you do not use muscle, then your muscle memory will not be used. This helps in inserting essential T20 weapons such as Yorkers, Slower balls.
They said, "If you do not play you will not be able to use your muscles and then you will struggle."
Stan’s own country man Kagiso Rabada is 25 years old and is also doing well this season. He remains in the Purple Cap race. Enrique Nortje of South Africa is another bowler who is troubling the batsmen with great pace this season.
De Villiers has attributed the success of Rabada and Enrique to his young age.
De Villiers said, "Rabada has not suffered much injuries and is young, strong. When I was 33-34 years old I know how difficult it was for me to bowl. I think Stan will get better by next year by playing some cricket."
Stan, 37, bowled at an estimated pace, line and length, and has not used any variation. This made the batsmen easier to play Stan.
In the match played on Wednesday night in Abu Dhabi, Steyn gave 43 runs in four overs and did not take a single wicket. This was their first match this month. Earlier, he played against Kings XI Punjab on 24 September and gave 57 runs in four overs.
Steyn’s only wicket in this IPL came in the match played against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 21 September. In this match, he dismissed Sandeep Sharma. He had given 33 runs in 3.4 overs.
